When you're comparing quotes from shed companies, price is usually at the front of mind. But there's another variable that's much harder to spot in a quote and far more costly to discover later: how the shed was engineered in the first place.

Some shed companies engineer their structures to meet the minimum requirements and nothing more. On paper, that shed is compliant. It passes the relevant standards. But it's been designed to do the bare minimum, with no thought given to what you might want to do with it down the track.

The ‘mullion’ problem

Mullions are the vertical framing members that support the wall purlins on a gable wall. If the engineering brief doesn't account for future extensions, there may be a chance that the truss has been underengineered due to the fact that it has the mullions as support. While this is fine when there is wall sheet, if you wanted to remove the wall sheeting and extend your shed, the truss will not be up to spec.

Because mullions can carry some of the load, trusses may be specified lighter,  reducing material costs and making the overall quote appear more competitive, with no obvious signs in the finished build.

The issue only becomes clear later. When you go to extend the shed or add a lean-to, the structure may not meet requirements, forcing costly upgrades or redesign,  despite no indication of this limitation in the original quote.

Minimum compliance isn't the same as quality

There's a version of shed engineering that asks: "what does this structure need to do right now?" And there's another version that asks: "what might this structure need to do over its lifetime?"

A lot of shed companies are working from the first question. It's faster, it produces cheaper quotes, and most customers won't know the difference until it's too late. Shed engineering to the minimum standard isn't unsafe, but it does leave you with a building that has limited flexibility and a shorter useful life than it could have had.

At Standwell, every structure is engineered to maximise strength and endurance, not just to meet today's requirements. That means buildings are engineered appropriately, connections are built with future loads in mind, and the overall structure is ready to grow with you.

If you're still at the quote stage and want to understand what else to watch out for, our earlier article on the hidden trap within shed quotes is worth a read before you commit to anything.

THE HIDDEN TRAP WITHIN SHED QUOTES

Why this matters more than it seems

Most people don't buy a shed with a detailed five-year plan in hand. You might need covered machinery storage now, but in three years, you want a workspace alongside it. Or you start with a basic farm shed and later need more room for growing equipment or stock. Life changes, operations change, and buildings that can't adapt become a liability.

When you're searching for shed companies near me, you'll find a wide range of options at a wide range of prices. The cheapest quote from a local shed company might be cheaper for a reason that doesn't appear anywhere in the documentation.

What to ask before you sign off

One thing that's worth asking directly: is this structure engineered to allow for future extensions? Can additional structures be added later without major modifications?

A shed company with solid engineering behind their builds should be able to answer those questions without hesitation. If the answers are vague, that's worth paying attention to.

Good shed engineering is about building smartly, so the structure performs well now and gives you genuine options later. Concrete slabs, extensions, awnings, extended bays: these should all be realistic possibilities, not expensive retrofits or outright impossibilities.

Building for the long run

A shed is a serious investment. Whether it's for your farm, your workshop, or your business, you want it to last and to work for you as your needs change. That's not something you can engineer in after the fact.

At Standwell, every structure is designed from the ground up with longevity and flexibility in mind, which is one of the things that separates us from shed companies that are simply racing to the bottom on price.
